Age is not a diagnosis, and it is no reason to put up with pain or unsteady movement. In later life physiotherapy has the same aim as at any age, keeping or rebuilding function and load tolerance; only the starting point, the pace and the goals differ. At MozgásKlinika Terézváros these are clarified at the first 60-minute assessment.
What do older patients come with?
Most often joint pain (knee, hip, shoulder), back and neck complaints, stiffness, unsteady walking, or the need for rehabilitation after surgery such as a joint replacement. Many do not come because of pain at all, but because something has become harder: stairs, getting up from a chair, carrying the shopping home.
These are good starting points. The therapist does not ask “how old”, but what you would like to do safely again.
How does treatment adapt to you?
A thorough assessment
The therapist asks about your history, conditions and medication, reviews your results, and examines range of motion, muscle strength, balance and movement control. If needed, they suggest you speak to your doctor first.
Graded, individual loading
Physiotherapy is not “gentle exercise” but work matched to your level and built up gradually. The levels of the MozgásPiramis® are the same in later life: pain, range of motion, strength, stability, then a return to everyday load. What changes is the size of the steps.
Manual therapy, where appropriate
Hands-on treatment can help reduce pain and stiffness and create a better position for active work. Whether it is suitable is decided by the therapist from the examination and your history.
Strength, balance, safety
Developing strength and balance also matters for everyday safety. The exercises are chosen, taught and checked by the therapist, and you take home only as much as you can do safely.
What should you bring, and what can you expect?
Bring your results, discharge summaries and a list of your medication, plus comfortable clothes and a change of shoes. What happens at your first visit describes the session.
After a joint replacement, rehabilitation follows the instructions of the surgeon.

When not to wait
See a doctor promptly if:
- the pain started after a fall or an accident;
- it comes with fever, unexplained weight loss or feeling generally unwell;
- you notice numbness or weakness in an arm or a leg, or it is getting worse;
- your bladder or bowel control has changed, or you have lost feeling around the saddle area: this is an emergency;
- you have pain at night that does not ease at rest.
With chest pain, sudden weakness, dizziness or severe pain after a fall, seek medical help immediately.
